No wardrobe is complete without a little bit of tartan. I thought it was a winter thing, but I have been proved wrong. Here is what Christian Dior's 'The Little Dictionary of Fashion' says:This is perhaps the only one of the fancy materials which is perennial. Tartan appears every season in some shape or form and is always young and gay.
But it is something you have to be careful with. The traditional use for tartan is of course for Scottish kilts – and when it is used in other ways it can be a little theatrical.
Plaids are a different matter – they can be of any colour and design; but tartans are authentic in both colour and design.
